City of Winnipeg calling on building owners to participate in building energy disclosure project

Winnipeg, MB – In an effort to promote data transparency and support its climate action goals, the City of Winnipeg has created a new project to publicly map community building energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The City is calling on eligible Winnipeg commercial and institutional building owners to register for free to participate in the Building Energy Disclosure Project. By registering, building owners agree to track their building’s energy and GHG performance on ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager and disclose key building profile and performance metrics for inclusion on the public disclosure map.

The Building Energy Disclosure Project is made possible by a financial contribution from the Government of Canada’s Department of Natural Resources.

“Investing in building energy efficiency reduces pollution, saves money, and helps companies be more competitive,” said the Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources. “As we work to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re supporting initiatives like the City of Winnipeg’s Building Energy Disclosure Project to help building owners better understand how they use energy, how to save it, and how to build sustainable communities.”

“A sustainable future for Winnipeg means having healthy, energy-efficient spaces for residents,” said Councillor Cindy Gilroy, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Water and Waste, Riverbank Management and the Environment. “With the Building Energy Disclosure Project, we hope to enable building owners to better understand the energy performance of their buildings, while supporting overall reductions in GHG emissions in our community.”

In addition to supporting the City’s public energy data and benchmarking efforts, participants will also receive the following:

  • A personalized scorecard that highlights their building’s key energy and GHG performance metrics.
  • Access to free educational workshops, offered by the City and its project consultant, the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC).
  • Assistance with identifying their building’s key metrics, including the creation of an ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager® account.

Council approved Winnipeg’s Climate Action Plan in September 2018. The plan calls for an overall 20 percent reduction of GHG emissions in Winnipeg by 2030 and 80 percent reduction by 2050, relative to 2011 levels.
