Winnipeg, MB – Portions of Archibald Street will close this weekend to accommodate road construction.

Southbound Archibald Street from St. Catherine Street to Elizabeth Road will close from 6:30 p.m. on September 17 to 6 a.m. on September 19.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to a fire on Dufferin Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 3:05 a.m. on Thursday, September 16, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to an automatic alarm at a large, four-storey commercial building in the 700 block of Dufferin Avenue.

When crews arrived on-scene, they encountered light smoke and signs of sprinkler activation. Crews searched the building, locating an extinguished fire that was contained to one room. They declared the incident under control at 3:42 a.m.

One occupant self-evacuated prior to crew arrival. No other occupants were located and no injuries were reported.

City of Winnipeg announces COVID-19 vaccine requirement for front-line staff

Winnipeg, MB – Today, the City of Winnipeg announced a COVID-19 vaccine requirement for front-line employees who have ongoing contact with vulnerable residents, including children under 12, or work in high-risk settings with direct, ongoing contact with the public. The requirement will extend to a number of employees including those working in public safety, community protection, recreation services, public transportation, and public-facing customer service roles. The City will continue to encourage all employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

City releases Financial Status and Forecast Report to June 30, 2021

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s second quarter financial status and forecast report is forecasting a projected deficit in the tax-supported operating budget (General Revenue Fund) of $14.3 million and an additional shortfall of $12.4 million in Transit as at June 30, 2021. The financial status and forecast report will be presented at the meeting of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance on September 17, 2021.

Temporary closure of Panet Road

Winnipeg, MB – Panet Road from Turenne Street to Dugald Road will fully close for emergency rail crossing work tomorrow, Tuesday, September 14.

The closure will begin at 5 a.m. and is expected to reopen around 11 p.m. on Thursday, September 16.

Local access to properties will be maintained up to the railway tracks in both directions.

Temporary closure on Broadway at Donald Street

Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeggers travelling through Downtown on Tuesday, September 14 are asked to plan ahead for a temporary closure of Broadway on either side of the Donald Street intersection.

For 30 minutes sometime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., flagpersons will redirect eastbound traffic onto northbound Hargrave Street, and westbound traffic onto northbound Smith Street to accommodate paving operations at the Donald Street intersection.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to a fire on Stella Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 9:06 p.m. on Sunday, September 12, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a report of a fire inside a vacant, two-and-a-half storey house in the 400 block of Stella Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, heavy smoke was coming from the building. They launched an offensive attack, bringing the fire under control at 9:31 p.m.

Crews completed a search of the house and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to a fire on Gateway Road

Winnipeg, MB – At 10:01 a.m. on Sunday, September 12, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a report of a fire inside a large, single-storey commercial building in the 1200 block of Gateway Road.

When crews arrived, they encountered flames and smoke in the building. They launched an offensive attack, containing the fire to the room of origin. The fire was declared under control at 10:12 a.m.

Crews searched the building and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Arlington Street and De la Seigneurie Boulevard

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two overnight fires on Sunday, September 12, 2021.

Arlington Street Fire

At 12:30 a.m., the WFPS responded to a report of a fire inside a vacant, two-storey house in the 400 block of Arlington Street.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered a well-involved fire with heavy smoke and flames. They launched an offensive attack, bringing the fire under control at 1:34 a.m.

Crews completed a search of the house and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

Elm Bark Beetle Control Program Begins

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s Elm Bark Beetle Control Program will begin Monday, September 13, 2021, weather permitting.

The program intends to reduce the spread of Dutch Elm Disease (DED) by controlling the beetles that carry the disease.
