Winnipeg, MB – At 10:20 a.m. on Saturday, September 18, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a structure fire at a 15-storey residential high-rise in the 400 block of Kennedy Street.
A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on scene, due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with a high-rise structure. The technical rescue task force also responded to the call.
Once on scene, crews determined there was heavy smoke coming from a suite. Crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 10:36 a.m.
Occupants of the suite self-evacuated prior to crew arrival. Other residents of the building either self-evacuated or sheltered-in-place until conditions improved. One resident was assessed by paramedics on-scene. No other injuries were reported.
Extensive fire, smoke and water damage was contained to the suite of origin. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
