Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg will soon know our weak points when it comes to climate change impacts thanks to a grant from the Municipal Green Fund.
We are receiving up to $140,000 from the Government of Canada and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) to help tackle climate change.
This funding will help pay for a city-wide climate risk and vulnerability assessment to determine where we most need to focus our climate change mitigation efforts.
The assessment is part of a larger study that will shape a new Climate Action Plan and Climate Resilience Strategy.
The new Climate Action Plan and Climate Resilience Strategy will explain what Winnipeg needs to do to reduce emissions and prepare for climate-related challenges.
“Winnipeg is already dealing with climate change, like extreme heat and big storms. This funding helps us plan better to reduce risks and build a safer future for everyone,” said Chair of the Water, Waste and the Environment Committee Ross Eadie.
The new plan will guide every City department and support collaboration with Indigenous peoples, equity groups, community partners, businesses, other governments.
“Climate change is creating real risks for Winnipeg, and we need to be ready,” said Brian Mayes, Chair of the Climate Action Resilience Committee. “This funding supports the important work required to understand those risks and plan responsibly for the future.”
Project planning for updating the Climate Action Plan is underway. Residents will have the chance to share their ideas. We will share more information about the project and opportunities for public engagement in spring 2026.
Residents can sign up to get updates about the project and engagement opportunities at Engage.winnipeg.ca.
