Start 2026 off right: only pay for the water you use

Winnipeg, MB – It’s time to take the guesswork out of utility billing.

Today kicks off our first Meter Reading Week.  We want to encourage our customers with estimated bills to submit meter readings, so they only pay for the water they use.

“Submitting a water meter reading takes less than a minute and it helps you get more accurate billing,” said Chair of the Water, Waste and the Environment Committee Ross Eadie. “It ensures you only pay for the water you use.”

The Water By-Law requires utility customers to provide one meter reading per year. We’d like customers to provide readings every time they receive their meter reading reminder by mail or email. Doing so helps prevent estimated bills.

Estimated bills can have customers paying too much or too little on their bills, which can lead to a large catch-up bill. Estimated bills can also hide leaks.

“A leak the size of a pencil lead can cost around $20 a day,” said Eadie. “Providing accurate meter reads every time you get your meter reading reminder can help identify leaks much faster.”

To submit a meter reading, customers will need their meter number and their meter reading. The meter number is on their water meter lid, while the meter reading is the odometer-style dial on the meter face. Please record every number, including zeros. Customers can submit their meter readings anytime by visiting winnipeg.ca/submitreading
