Released: January 7, 2024 at 8:25 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to two structure fires this evening.

McCreedy Road fire

At 6:27 p.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2024, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey, single-family house on McCreedy Road.

When crews arrived to the scene, they found smoke in the house. They entered and fought the fire from inside, declaring the fire under control at 7:08 p.m.

All occupants of the house safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction. Damage estimates are not available at this time.

Clifton Street fire

At 4:18 p.m. on Sunday, January 7, 2024, WFPS crews responded to reports of a fire in a two-and-a-half storey duplex in the 400 block of Clifton Street.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke coming from the structure. They entered and quickly extinguished the fire.

All occupants of the building self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. Three individuals were assessed by paramedics. One of them was transported to hospital.

Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by a malfunction in the operation of a clothes dryer.

The risk of these types of fires can be reduced by following these important tips:

  • Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional to ensure it is in good working order.
  • Do not use the dryer without a lint filter and always clean the filter after each load of laundry.
  • Periodically check the venting system to ensure there is no lint buildup and it is not damaged, crushed, or restricted.
  • Make sure the outdoor vent flap opens when the dryer is running.
  • Never leave a dryer running when leaving your home.
