When crews arrived to the scene, they found smoke coming from the residence as a result of a kitchen fire. Firefighters entered and fought the fire from the interior of the house, declaring the fire under control at 8:38 a.m.
There were no people in the house at the time of the fire. One dog made it safely out of the house. Crews completed a search of the house and located another dog and two pet birds deceased. There were no other injuries reported.
Damage estimates are not available at this time. Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental. Residents are reminded of the following safety tips to reduce the risk of kitchen fires:
- Oven mitts, utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains should be kept away from the stovetop.
- Always stay in the kitchen while cooking and ensure all elements are turned off when finished.
- Oil should be heated slowly. If cooking oil catches fire and the fire is small and manageable, use a kitchen fire extinguisher or cover the top with a metal lid.
- Never use water to put out an oil fire.
