Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two overnight structure fires.
Tweed Avenue fire
At 2:21 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, one-and-a-half storey house in the 300 block of Tweed Avenue.
When crews arrived on scene they found heavy smoke coming from the house. They launched a fire attack from the exterior of the house. Once fire conditions improved, they were able to enter the structure and fight the fire from inside. The fire was declared under control at 2:38 a.m.
A search of the house was completed and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. At this time, damage estimates are not available.
Kennedy Street fire
At 4:05 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2023, WFPS crews responded to a monitored fire alarm in a high-rise apartment building in the 400 block of Kennedy Street.
Upon arrival on scene, crews found smoke in the building. With the potential for high life hazards when dealing with a high-rise, a second alarm was called which increased the number of crews on scene. Crews fought the fire from inside the building, declaring the fire under control at 4:29 a.m.
While some residents self-evacuated, crews helped others in evacuating from the building. Some residents were able to shelter in place. No injuries were reported.
Fire damage was contained to the suite where the fire originated. Most residents were able to return to their suites once firefighters ventilated smoke from the building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. At this time, damage estimates are not available.
