Winnipeg, MB – At 2:24 p.m. on Monday, June 26, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a severed gas line in the 300 block of Selkirk Avenue.
Upon arrival on scene, crews were made aware that a large gas line was accidently ruptured by a road construction crew. With the help of the Winnipeg Police Service, Selkirk Avenue was closed between Main Street and Salter Street.
Crews quickly facilitated the evacuation of approximately 40 buildings between Charles Street and Salter Street. Transit was called to provide a temporary, air-conditioned cooling space for impacted residents.
Once Manitoba Hydro stopped the leak, WFPS crews checked gas levels in all homes and workplaces before allowing residents to return. No injuries were reported.
Selkirk Avenue will remain closed while Manitoba Hydro completes repairs to the damaged gas line. It is expected to re-open later tonight.
