Winnipeg, MB – On the evening of Saturday, June 17, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires.
Kennedy Street
At 4:40 a.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in an apartment building in the 400 block of Kennedy Street.
At the scene, crews found a building with heavy smoke and flames coming from it. Firefighters rescued four people from the building using ladders. Paramedics treated and transported three people to hospital, one in critical condition and two in stable condition.
Firefighters attacked the fire, declaring it under control at 5:28 a.m.
A Winnipeg Transit bus responded to the scene to provide temporary shelter for displaced residents. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team responded to help 18 residents find temporary living accommodations until they can return to their homes.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The building sustained significant smoke, fire, and water damage.
Furby Street
At 5:08 a.m., WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a home in the 600 block of Furby Street. At the scene, crews saw heavy smoke coming from the house.
Firefighters rescued one person from the building. Two other people safely self-evacuated. Paramedics treated and transported three patients to hospital, one in critical condition and two in stable condition.
Firefighters attacked the fire from the outside until it was safe to enter the building and attack the fire from the inside. Crews declared the fire under control at 6:22 a.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The home sustained significant damage.
