Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to wildland fire in Marlene Street Park

Released: April 25, 2023 at 8:33 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 4:47 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in Marlene Street Park (located at Beliveau Road and Marlene Street).

When crews arrived at the location, they found a wildland fire roughly 6,000 square meters in size near the banks of the Seine River. Using specialized equipment, including a WFPS Bison, crews quickly stopped the fire from spreading and declared it under control at 5:02 p.m. No injuries were reported.

While the cause of this fire is not known at this time, it is believed to be from human activity.

As the ground dries out, WFPS reminds residents to exercise extreme caution when doing any sort of burning. When wind speeds exceed 25 kilometers per hour, all open-air fires, including those in approved fire pits, are prohibited. Even if a resident has obtained a burning permit, fires are not permitted under these conditions.

Residents should never dispose of cigarette butts in any sort of vegetation or from vehicle windows. Butts should also never be put out in planter pots.
