City to report on establishing a long-term seasonal patio program for local businesses

Winnipeg, MB – The City is now accepting registrations for summer operation in the temporary patio program that will allow eligible businesses to operate a temporary patio space from April 1, 2023 to October 31, 2023.

Council has approved waiving administrative costs for businesses registering for the temporary patio program through to March 2024. The Public Service will also report back on the feasibility of making the seasonal temporary patio registration a long-term program offered by the City, removing the requirement for Council to extend the program.

"The temporary program has demonstrated we can simplify the process for adding patios while continuing to ensure they operate safely,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “I believe we should look at making that a permanent offering because it’s a win-win for local business and for Winnipeggers who want to enjoy our amazing summers.”

Businesses that wish to participate in the temporary patio program beginning on April 1, 2023, will need to submit a new registration form. Previous temporary patio registrations will not carry forward.

The City began offering the temporary patio program in May 2020 as a way to allow eligible businesses to quickly and safely establish temporary patio spaces that complied with public health orders at the time. The City has continued to offer the program to local businesses, opening registration biannually for winter and summer operation. There were 76 local businesses that registered for the temporary patio program in 2022.
