At 2:57 p.m. on January 8, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 600 block of Furby Street.
Upon arrival at the scene, crews found heavy smoke coming from the house. Due to the high heat crews initially fought the fire defensively from the exterior of the house.
Conditions improved for a short time and they were able to enter the structure to apply water to the fire. Conditions deteriorated and crews were forced to move back to an exterior attack, using an aerial ladder.
Once most of the fire was knocked down, crews were once again able to enter the structure to extinguish hot spots. The fire was declared under control at 6:53 p.m.
Occupants of all neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time but the house suffered significant smoke, fire and water damage. It is expected to be a complete loss.
