Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to three structure fires this morning

Winnipeg, MB – On the morning of Tuesday, January 3, 2023, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to three structure fires.

Stella Avenue

At 6:44 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant one-storey house in the 400 block of Stella Avenue.

At the scene, crews saw heavy black smoke and flames coming from the house. Firefighters attacked the fire from outside using aerial ladders due to the structural instability of the house. The fire was under control at 8:35 a.m. No injuries have been reported.

The structure has sustained extensive damage and it poses a safety risk. The house will be demolished. WFPS crews are expected to be on scene into the morning. Drivers should avoid the area. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Sargent Avenue

At 9:01 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 700 block of Sargent Avenue.

At the scene, crews saw smoke in the building. Firefighters searched the building and helped some residents evacuate. Paramedics transported one person to hospital in critical condition.

Firefighters attacked from inside the building, and the fire was under control within an hour. No damage estimates are available. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Ferry Road

At 9:56 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a one-storey home in the 300 block of Ferry Road.

At the scene, crews saw smoke coming from the home. Firefighters attacked the fire from inside the house, and the fire was under control within an hour.

Firefighters searched the home to ensure there was no one inside. No injuries were reported.

Preliminary reports suggest the fire was accidental and related to the electrical system. No damage estimates are available.
