At 2:21 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in vacant two-storey structure in the 200 block of Selkirk Avenue.
Once on scene, crews saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the building, and helped one individual evacuate the structure. The individual was assessed and treated by paramedics on scene, and then transported to hospital in critical condition.
Crews fought the fire from outside the building because it was unsafe to enter it. Firefighters used the Flameguard X-Tinguish Fire Suppression Tool (FST). The aerosol device reduces temperatures, which allows for safer access. The FST generates a mist that expands to flood the space, suppressing flames within seconds.
Once some of the flames were reduced, crews entered the building to finish extinguishing the fire. The fire was under control at 3:02 p.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and no damage estimates are available.
