Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to two overnight fires in high-rises

Released: November 13, 2022 at 10:33 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to two fires in high-rise buildings in Winnipeg overnight.

Kennedy Street

At 2:42 a.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2022, crews responded to reports of a fire in a 16-storey building in the 400 block of Kennedy Street. Due to the high life safety considerations associated with a high-rise building, a second alarm was called and more crews responded.

Crews saw smoke and fire inside the building and attacked the fire from inside the building. Firefighters used a Flameguard X-Tinguish Fire Suppression Tool (FST), an aerosol device that reduces temperatures. The FST generates a mist that expands to flood the space, suppressing flames quickly and creating a safer environment for firefighters.

The fire was under control at 3:50 a.m. No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Donald Street

At 4:57 a.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2022, crews responded to reports of a fire in an 8-storey mixed use building in the 200 block of Donald Street.

They saw the building’s sprinkler system had extinguished the fire. Crews remained on scene to ensure the fire had not spread and to confirm the building was safe for re-entry.

No one was injured. Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was accidental. No damage estimates are available.
