Winnipeg, MB – At 12:46 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a fire in a one-and-a-half storey, single family home in the 300 block of Belvidere Street.
When crews arrived on scene, they found black smoke coming from the house. Firefighters attacked the fire from inside the home, declaring it under control at 1:19 p.m.
No one was home at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.
Preliminary observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by unattended cooking. Residents are reminded of the following safety tips to reduce the risk of kitchen fires:
- Always stay in the kitchen while cooking.
- Oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels, or curtains should be kept away from the stovetop.
- Heat oil slowly. If cooking oil catches fire and the fire is small and manageable, use a kitchen fire extinguisher or cover the top of the pot/pan with a metal lid.
- Never use water to put out an oil fire.
Damage estimates are not available at this time.
