Winnipeg, MB – Today, 26 additional local organizations and businesses joined the City of Winnipeg and the other 196 signatories in their commitment to the ongoing Journey of Reconciliation in Winnipeg by formally becoming partners of Winnipeg’s Indigenous Accord at a signing ceremony held at Oodena Celebration Circle located at The Forks. Today’s signatories bring the total number of Accord partners to 222 and demonstrates a strong community commitment to Winnipeg’s Journey of Reconciliation.
“At the junction where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet, The Forks has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years and is the appropriate setting for us to gather and share the steps we are taking to advance reconciliation in our community,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “I want to thank all individuals and organizations who are past or new signatories to the Indigenous Accord. We will continue to work together as partners to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited Calls for Justice.”
The Accord guides our shared commitment to the Journey of Reconciliation in Winnipeg, and is rooted in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) 94 Calls to Action and more recently the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirited (MMIWG2S+) Calls for Justice, and is guided by the commitments and principles contained in the Accord.
In becoming signatories to Winnipeg’s Indigenous Accord, partners each establish an ongoing commitment to setting goals, implementing action plans, and sharing progress annually. Our Journey of Reconciliation is constant in our collective effort to contribute to achieving transformational change in our relationships, partnerships, systems, and structures.
Collaboration with other organizations and groups, across sectors, and with Indigenous organizations, governments, and individuals is essential to the ongoing Journey of Reconciliation in Winnipeg to make our city a better place to live based on mutual respect, equal opportunity, and hope.
