Commitment to road renewal continues to be a priority with nearly 200 projects planned throughout the 2022 construction season

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg’s annual road construction program is underway with nearly 200 construction projects planned city-wide. In total, over 175 lane kilometers of infrastructure improvements are scheduled this year.

The road construction projects scheduled this year represent a total budgeted investment of approximately $165 million in improvements to local and regional streets, back lanes, sidewalks, and active transportation routes. Nearly all scheduled projects have been tendered to date.

“Fixing Winnipeg’s roads has been a priority during my time in office and next year, we’ll reach over $1 billion in investments in road repairs since 2014,” said Mayor Brian Bowman. “The work of Dr. Ahmed Shalaby, the University of Manitoba’s Municipal Infrastructure Research Chair, has also improved pavement service life by up to 15%, which reduces the frequency of maintenance and rehabilitation. Roads represent Winnipeg's largest infrastructure asset. The City has made significant progress in fixing and improving how they are built after decades of neglect.”

The City’s investment in regional and local road renewal this year reflects the full value of the two percent increase in property taxes. It also marks the fourth year of the Accelerated Regional Street Renewal (ARSR) where the Governments of Canada and Manitoba are each contributing up to $100 million toward the ARSR project under the New Building Canada Fund–Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component–National and Regional Projects (PTIC-NRP) program. Work involves rebuilding and rehabilitating 49 segments of roadway across the city that will create jobs, improve road safety and ensure long-term sustainable infrastructure, while building strong and well-connected communities across the city of Winnipeg.

“The Government of Canada is proudly contributing $100 million to Winnipeg’s Accelerated Regional Street Renewal project,” said Terry Duguid, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, on behalf of the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities. “This annual road construction program will reconstruct and rehabilitate streets and active transportation routes to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation options for all. Investments in transit and road rehabilitation create meaningful change in communities across Canada and by collaborating with our partners, we can improve the quality of life for residents and build stronger, more resilient communities.”

“Well-maintained roads are key to maintaining sustainable and diverse transportation networks that get Canadians to where they need to go,” said the Honourable Jim Carr, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre. “Winnipeg’s street renewal project will have a positive impact on the day-to-day lives of Winnipeggers by creating good jobs, growing the economy, and connecting our communities.”

“The Manitoba government is proud to continue partnering with the City of Winnipeg on improvements to transportation infrastructure,” said Manitoba Labour, Consumer Protection and Government Services Minister Reg Helwer. “This past winter was particularly difficult for Winnipeg drivers and the roads they use. The projects planned for this construction season will make the streets safer and more efficient for all who use them.”

This year’s road renewal budget includes portions of the following major reconstruction and rehabilitation projects:

Notable Accelerated Regional Street Renewal Projects Scheduled in 2022

  • Stafford Street, from Corydon Avenue to Pembina Highway – $14 million
  • Jubilee Avenue, from Osborne Street to Pembina Highway – $13 million
  • Mountain Avenue, from Arlington Street to McPhillips Street – $10.5 million
  • Smith Street, from Notre Dame Avenue to the Midtown Bridge – $9.2 million

During the road construction season, motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and to download and use Waze to find the fastest route.
