Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Laxdal Road

Released: June 25, 2022 at 4:44 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 7:14 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire at a bungalow in the 800 block of Laxdal Road.

When crews arrived on-scene, they encountered a well-involved fire. They initially launched an offensive attack, but quickly switched to a defensive strategy due to safety concerns.

In addition to hand-lines, firefighters were aided by the use of the Flameguard X-Tinguish Fire Suppression Tool (FST), an aerosol device that reduces temperatures, which allows for safer access. The FST generates a mist that expands to flood the space, suppressing flames within seconds. The fire was declared under control at approximately 9:35 a.m.

One occupant self-evacuated prior to crew arrival. No other injuries were reported.

Crews rescued two pets on-scene. One was safely reunited with its owner. The other was provided with medical intervention but succumbed to fire-related injuries and could not be saved.

The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services was called to assist the occupant in finding temporary accommodations.

The structure suffered extensive fire, smoke, and water damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.
