Winnipeg, MB – At 6:53 a.m. on Monday, June 13, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to an automatic alarm at a three-storey, mixed-use commercial-residential building in the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue.
Upon arrival, crews found light smoke coming from a suite on one of the floors. Upon further investigation, firefighters determined that a fire in the suite had activated the building’s sprinkler system, which successfully confined most of the fire. They ensured complete extinguishment and proceeded to ventilate the building. The fire did not extend to neighbouring suites. The fire was declared under control at 7:36 a.m.
No occupants were found in the fire suite. Occupants of other suites self-evacuated or were assisted by crews in safely exiting the building. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services was called to assist up to 12 individuals in finding temporary accommodations. No injuries were reported.
Fire damage was contained to the suite of origin, with water damage to throughout the structure. The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are available at this time.
