Winnipeg, MB – At 12:55 a.m. on Monday, February 7, 2022 the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a one-and-a-half-storey single-family house in the 100 block of Seven Oaks Avenue.
Once crews arrived on-scene, they encountered smoke and flames coming from the house. They launched an offensive attack, quickly declaring the fire under control at 1:11 a.m.
Two occupants self-evacuated prior to crew arrival. No injuries were reported.
Crews located one cat in the home and safely reunited it with its owners.
The house suffered minimal fire, smoke and water damage. Damage estimates are not available. While the cause of the fire is currently under investigation, observations suggest the fire was accidental, caused by a dryer operation malfunction. Residents can follow these tips to reduce their risk of dryer fires:
- Have your dryer installed and serviced by a professional to ensure it is in good working order.
- Do not use the dryer without a lint filter and always clean the filter after each load of laundry.
- Periodically check the venting system to ensure there is no lint buildup and it is not damaged, crushed, or restricted.
- Make sure the outdoor vent flap opens when the dryer is running.
- Never leave a dryer running when leaving your home.
