Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Morley Avenue and Leila Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two house fires this evening.

Morley Avenue Fire

At 4:09 p.m. on Sunday, December 5, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in single-family bungalow in the first 100 block of Morley Avenue.

When crews arrived on-scene, they encountered smoke and flames coming from the house. They launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 5:13 p.m.

All occupants of the building self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. A neighbouring house was temporarily evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

The fire remains under investigation. No damage estimates are available.

Leila Avenue Fire

At 5:43 p.m. on Sunday, December 5, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a one-and-a-half storey, single family home in the 200 block of Leila Avenue.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered heavy smoke coming from the house. An offensive attack was launched but were forced to exit the structure due to deteriorating conditions. They transitioned to a defensive strategy and fire was declared under control at 8:19 p.m.

All occupants of the house safely self-evacuated prior to the arrival of crews. Both neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries were reported. The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services was called to assist displaced residents in finding temporary accommodations.

Crews located two dogs and two cats in the house. They attempted to resuscitate one of the dogs but were unsuccessful. All four pets were declared deceased.

The fire remains under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
