Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to multiple overnight fires

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a number of fires overnight, two of which involved structures. No injuries were reported.

  • The first report came in at 2:43 a.m. when a 911 caller reported an outdoor fire in the 600 block of McGregor Street.
  • At 4:39 a.m., the WFPS responded to a fire in a vacant house in the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue. The fire was declared under control at 5:43 a.m.
  • At 5:35 a.m., the WFPS responded to an outdoor fire in the 600 block of McGregor Street.
  • At 5:50 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of garbage on fire in the 400 block of Manitoba Avenue.
  • At 6:44 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of an outdoor fire in the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue.
  • At 7:52 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of an outdoor fire in the 100 block of Salter Street.
  • At 8:26 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of an outdoor fire in the 300 block of Selkirk Avenue, followed by reports of a structure fire in the same block, reported at 8:27 a.m. This fire was declared under control at 8:59 p.m.
  • At 9:03 a.m., the WFPS responded to reports of an outdoor fire in the 300 block of Selkirk Avenue.

No damage estimates are available. All incidents are under investigation and considered suspicious. Anyone with information related to these incidents is asked to contact the Winnipeg Police Service at 204-986-6219.

Fires that start outdoors can very quickly spread to nearby buildings or structures, threatening lives and causing damage to buildings. Residents and business owners can help prevent outdoor fires on their properties by following these safety tips:

  • Keep garbage, yard waste, or bulky waste (such as old furniture) away from buildings, garages, and fences. Call 311 to arrange for bulky waste pickup.
  • Only put your garbage and recycling carts and yard waste out on your collection day.
  • Store flammable materials safely.
  • Keep shrubs and trees near buildings trimmed and watered, and ensure they are regularly cleared of dead plant matter.
  • Keep doors and windows secured.
  • Use motion-activated lights to brighten the outside of your home or business.
