Winnipeg, MB – Starting today at 6 p.m., southbound Empress Street over Portage Avenue between Westway and St. John Ambulance Way (Empress Overpass) will be closed to vehicular traffic due to an unanticipated increase in the scope of work required to reconstruct and rehabilitate the roadway and overpass.
This closure was initially planned for April 29; however, planned construction activities revealed an increase in the magnitude and quantity of works required underneath the overpass, and the decision was made to implement the closure now out of an abundance of caution. The closure is expected to remain in place until November 29.
Please note, the overpass will remain open to northbound traffic – there is no risk to motorist safety when travelling on the remaining lane.
Access to adjacent businesses will be maintained via northbound Empress Street; motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists are asked to use an alternate route and – when possible – approach the area from the north. Additional travel time will be required.
