Planned Demonstration – Public Advisory

The Winnipeg Police Service and other stakeholders are aware of a planned demonstration around the Legislative Buildings and surrounding area set to begin at 9:00 am Friday, February 4, 2022. This event is being coordinated in support of the protests occurring in Ottawa and other jurisdictions. It is believed that large trucks and vehicles will arrive in a convoy and are expected to remain for some time.

Police are working with the organizers to facilitate a peaceful event which respects their right to protest, while ensuring public safety.

Aggravated Assault – Arrests: C22-17225

Update:

On February 1, 2022, at approximately 11:45 p.m., Shane Christopher David Delaronde, a 24-year-old male of Winnipeg, was located and placed under arrest at a residence in the East Elmwood neighbourhood.

Delaronde was the subject of an arrest warrant for Aggravated Assault and weapon-related offences for his alleged role in a serious stabbing that occurred on January 24 in the 200 block of Portage Avenue.

He has been detained in custody. We thank the public and the media for their assistance.

Carjacking – Arrests: C22-23205

On February 2, 2022, at 12:02 a.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a care facility in the South Point Douglas area for a report of a carjacking.

An employee had just left when they were confronted at knifepoint by an individual that had been recently discharged from the building. The male demanded her keys and fled in her SUV.

Assault/Weapons – Arrest: C22-23175

On February 1, 2022, at 10:59 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a shelter in the South Point Douglas area for a report of a male damaging a window with a machete.

Soon after, officers located the male in the area and safely took him into custody.

It is believed that the male had been rejected entry to the shelter due to past behaviour, at which time he punched a security guard and began swinging the weapon—striking protective glass near a staff office.

Homicide – Arrests: C21-278721

Members of the Homicide Unit are providing an update on the homicide investigation of Tyler Patrick Yarema, a 42-year-old male who was shot and killed two months ago.

On November 29, 2021, at approximately 5:30 a.m., General Patrol units responded to a report of shots that had been fired at a single-family residence in the 200 block of Forrester Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found that Yarema had been shot and administered emergency medical care until he was transported to a hospital in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Homicide – Investigation: C22-20547

On January 29, 2022, at approximately 3:00 a.m., a seriously injured male was located within a hotel in the 600 block of Main Street. Emergency Services transported the victim to hospital in critical condition, and police were subsequently notified.

The victim later succumbed to his injuries, and the Homicide Unit took over the investigation.

The deceased has been identified as Norman Nigel BIRD, a 29-year-old male of Winnipeg.
