Assault with a Weapon – Arrest: C22-41560

On February 27, 2022, at 8:03 p.m., Central District General Patrol officers responded to a shelter in the South Point Douglas area for a report of a male inside the building threatening people with a knife.

While officers were en route, a second call was received stating that the male had attempted to stab an employee, and staff had him restrained on the ground. He was taken into custody soon after.

Shooting – Investigation: C22-41722

On February 28, 2022, at approximately 4:45 a.m., General Patrol officers responded to a shooting in front of an apartment building in the 500 block of Elgin Avenue.

Officers observed the windows shot out of the apartment vestibule and they followed a blood trail leading to a suite. Two adult females were located injured. One of the females
had been shot in the upper body and was transported to hospital in critical condition, while the other female was transported unstable. Both victims are now stable.

Homicide – Arrest: C22-40305

Update:

On February 26, 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service issued a media release about a homicide that had occurred early that morning. The deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Jorden James BATEMAN of Winnipeg.

Later that morning, detectives in the Homicide Unit arrested and charged 21-year-old Jonathan Dakota Cree CHASKE of Winnipeg with Second Degree Murder.

Investigators have determined that the deceased and the accused were previously known to each other.

Homicide – Arrests: C22-32332

Update:

Detectives with the Winnipeg Police Major Crimes Unit have arrested three suspects in the murder of 19-year-old John Lloyd BARRION, who was killed in the early morning hours of February 15, 2022.

Shooting – Investigation: C22-40288

On February 26, 2022, at approximately 12:20 a.m., Winnipeg Police responded to the 700 block of Sargent Avenue for a report of gunshots. Offices located a female in her twenties in a front yard suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition but has since been upgraded to stable.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call investigators at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Homicide – Investigation: C22-40305

On February 26, 2022, at approximately 12:55 a.m., Winnipeg Police responded to a report of an assault at a residence in the 500 block of Toronto Street. Officers located an injured adult male. He was conveyed to the hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Homicide Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Search Warrant – Arrests: R22-3647

In mid-January 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service was alerted by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) to suspicious packages being sent to a resident in Winnipeg.

On February 16, 2022, following an investigation regarding the importation and manufacturing of Conducted Energy Weapons into the province, the Canadian Border Services Agency and the Winnipeg Police Service were granted search warrants for a single-family residence in the Transcona neighbourhood of Winnipeg.

Fatal Hit & Run – Arrest: C21-182709

Update:

The Winnipeg Police Service previously issued a media release seeking the public’s assistance for a fatal hit and run that occurred on the morning of August 6, 2021. A female pedestrian in her 80’s was taken to hospital in critical condition after being struck by a 5-ton truck while crossing the intersection at Smith Street and Broadway Avenue. On August 8, the victim succumbed to her injuries.

During the following months, the Traffic Division continued investigating and establishing the identity of the suspect driver.

Community Notification

The Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit (MIHRSOU) is a joint forces unit of the Winnipeg Police Service and the RCMP. MIHRSOU today provides information regarding MARINUS WILLEMSE, 55 years of age, a convicted sex offender who is considered high risk to re‑offend in a sexual/sexually violent manner against adult females, and all children.

Robbery – Arrests: C22-38213

On February 23, 2022, at approximately 1:00 p.m., General Patrol officers from the Central District responded to Portage Avenue and Edmonton Street for a robbery at a bus shelter.
