Sexual Assault – Arrest: C22-58886

Winnipeg Police Service Child Abuse Unit (CAU) investigators have made an arrest in an incidence of Sexual Assault, where details were first released on March 23, 2022. CAU detectives were able to identify a suspect and circulate details to all officers throughout the Service.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. yesterday, WPS Auxillary Force Cadets patrolling in the Downtown area located the suspect. Central District uniform offices were called to assist, and the male was arrested.

Thefts – Arrest: R21-60804

Between August 2021 and March 2022, members of the Winnipeg Police Service Property Crimes Unit began investigating a series of thefts. These incidents were diverse, including residential break-ins, thefts from vehicles, stolen trailers/vehicles, and shoplifting throughout the City, however, investigators suspected they were linked.

Sexual Assault – Investigation: C22-58886

The Winnipeg Police Service Child Abuse Unit is investigating an assault that occurred on March 21, 2022. At approximately 3:30 p.m., the victim, a 12-year-old girl, was at a transit shelter at the corner of Portage Avenue and Main Street, where an adult male struck up a conversation. The male convinced the girl to walk with him. The suspect took the girl to a building stairwell off Lombard Avenue and Rorie Street, where she was seriously sexually assaulted. The victim left the area and reported the incident to police.

"Grandparent" Scam Update: Public Advisory

In October 2021, the Winnipeg Police Service issued an informative and cautionary media release in response to a dramatic increase in telephone scams targeting the elderly population (known as the "Grandparent Scam").

Medical Incident: C22-57242

On March 19, 2022, at approximately 7:30 p.m., a General Patrol unit was driving past the 300 block of Portage Avenue when they were flagged down by a person and directed to an unresponsive adult male on the ground who appeared to be experiencing an overdose.

Street Connections (a mobile public health service run by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority) also attended, and an ambulance was requested. Together, officers and staff with Street Connections administered multiple doses of naloxone to revive the male.

Serious Motor Vehicle Collision – Investigation: C22-57220

On March 19, 2022, at approximately 7:00 p.m., emergency personnel responded to the first 100 block of Berry Hill Road for a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, an adult male, was transported to a hospital in critical condition (where he remains) by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and STARS Air Ambulance.

The driver of the vehicle, also an adult male, remained on the scene and met with officers.

Drug Trafficking – Arrest: C22-54859

During the evening of March 16, 2022, officers from the East District Community Support Unit conducted a traffic stop while patrolling the Harbour View South neighbourhood.

The driver was known to police and had an outstanding warrant. He was taken into custody, and approximately $7,790 worth of cocaine was seized along with $1,550 in Canadian currency.

Shooting – Investigation: C21-232090

Update:

On March 16, 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit arrested a 29-year-old male of Winnipeg in relation to a shooting on October 4, 2021.

At the time of the incident, the accused and the victim (previously known to each other) were driving in a vehicle together down a back lane near McKenzie Street and Parr Avenue when the accused shot the victim in the face causing severe facial injuries. The accused fled on foot and the investigation continued by the Major Crimes Unit.

Firearms – Arrest: C22-53587

During the afternoon of March 15, 2022, as part of an ongoing firearms investigation, members in the North District Community Support Unit were patrolling in the Lord Selkirk Park neighbourhood.

An adult male known to police was taken into custody at Selkirk Avenue and Aikins Street. A sawed-off Lee Enfield bolt-action rifle and a Glock 19 Airsoft pistol with an obliterated serial number were found concealed in his backpack.

The Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit (MIHRSOU) is a joint forces unit of the Winnipeg Police Service and the RCMP. MIHRSOU today provides information regarding WILMER JAVIER MEJIA, 45 years of age, a convicted sex offender who is considered a high risk to re-offend in a sexual/sexually violent manner against all females, both children and adults.
