Break & Enters – Arrest: C22-218469

The Winnipeg Police Service Property Crime Unit and West District Community Support Unit have arrested and charged a male with 69 break-in-related offences, totalling over $130,000 worth of stolen property.

Between January and September 2022, over a dozen residences in the Southwest area of the city, as well as the Southeast and William Whyte neighbourhoods, were victimized.

Officer-Involved Incident – Investigation: C22-224102

On September 27, 2022, at approximately 8:15 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service became involved in an officer-involved shooting at a residence in the Point Douglas neighbourhood. An adult male was transported to hospital unstable and has since been upgraded to stable.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation. Please direct any follow-up inquiries to the IIU.

Firearms/Drug Search Warrant – Arrests: C22-221595

In September of 2022, the Winnipeg Police Service’s Guns & Gangs Unit entered a drug trafficking investigation involving several suspects and a residence in the East Kildonan neighbourhood.

On September 24, 2022, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Unit, the Guns & Gangs Unit executed a search warrant on a residence in the first block of Colley Crescent.
Two suspects were located within the residence and placed under arrest without incident.

Investigators seized several items from the residence, including the following:

Robberies & Kidnapping – Arrests: C22-212620

Members of the Major Crimes Unit have charged a male and a female for three serious incidents involving robberies and a kidnapping.

On September 14, 2022, at 9:29 p.m., East District General Patrol units, with the assistance of AIR1, responded to a report of a stabbing at an apartment building in the 200 block of Edison Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers located an injured male (in his 50s). He was transported to a hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable condition.

Carjacking – Updated Picture: C22-219024

Members of the Major Crimes Unit continue to investigate the carjacking of a 72-year-old female in the Norwood East area.

The victim’s stolen vehicle, a green 2014 Subaru Forester with Manitoba licence plate FCM 461, remains outstanding.

Investigators had previously released a stock photo of the vehicle but have now obtained an image of the actual stolen SUV, which has been attached.

Please note the black steel “winter” rims that have noticeably rusted.

Weapons – Arrest: C22-190952

In August 2022, the Guns & Gangs Unit began an investigation into a male who was suspected to be in illicit possession of a handgun.

During the evening of August 22, the suspect was taken into custody, and a search warrant was executed at a residence in the 200 block of Centennial Street. A search of the house resulted in the seizure of a number of items, including a loaded Glock handgun and approximately $10,000.

Grandparent Scam – Reminder

The Winnipeg Police Service continues to receive reports of local "grandparent scams" (also known as "emergency scams"). The Financial Crime Unit is investigating these matters but wishes to remind the public of the scam and provide information.

The "grandparent scam" often involves an actor calling an elderly person and claiming to be a grandchild who is in serious legal trouble and needs money immediately. The caller sometimes cries, and there is often urgency and secrecy around the demands.

Weapons – Arrest: C22-221342

On September 23, 2022, at approximately 10:00 p.m., a Central District Foot Patrol unit was patrolling near the Millennium Library when they heard an argument in front of the building.

As they approached, they observed a male produce a can of bear spray and discharge it at three people sitting on a bench. The suspect walked away briefly but returned and discharged the can again.

Homicide – Investigation: C22-221461

On September 24, 2022, at 1:19 a.m., Central District General Patrol units and the Tactical Support Team responded to a vendor in the 1100 block of Arlington Street for a report of an assault.

Upon arrival, officers located a seriously injured male and began emergency medical care. The male was transported to a hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced deceased.

The victim has since been identified as Enrique George Courchene, a 29-year-old male of Winnipeg.
