Snow Clearing Update

Winnipeg, MB - In response to heavy accumulations of snow, today City crews are continuing to plow and sand main routes, bus routes and collector streets. This operation will continue tonight and on Wednesday to improve traction and traffic flow during this winter storm. Sidewalks on main routes and active transportation paths adjacent to main routes are also being cleared. Starting Wednesday at 7:00 a.m., plowing of back lanes will begin and will continue until completed. All snow disposal sites will open tonight at 7:00 p.m.

City crews prepared to deal with forecasted snowfall

Winnipeg, MB - City crews are ‘ready-to-serve’ and prepared to deal with the snow that is in the forecast for Winnipeg this week. Sanding and salting of streets is continuing to improve road conditions and operations will be ramped up as the storm reaches Winnipeg. The City’s Public Works Department is monitoring road conditions and crews are in a ready to deploy status. Accumulations of snow will be monitored and further decisions will be made as the weather system passes through the City.

Inaugural civil marriage ceremony takes place at City Hall

Winnipeg, MB - Lisa and Chris, winners of the City of Winnipeg’s first civil marriage ceremony contest, will become the first couple to exchange vows at City Hall this afternoon.

Lisa and Chris met in 2002 at Transcona Collegiate Institute and connected over a shared love of music and video games. They share two beautiful children, a home and a cat.

Arlington Street from Notre Dame Avenue to Wellington Avenue will be temporarily closed for MTS repairs on December 4

Winnipeg, MB - Starting Sunday, December 4 at 7:00 a.m., Arlington Street from Notre Dame Avenue to Wellington Avenue will be temporarily closed in both the northbound and southbound directions until 4:00 p.m. for MTS repairs.

Pedestrian access will be permitted on the west sidewalk while this work is underway.

Motorists should use alternate routes such as Maryland Street or Erin Street.

Transit fare increases in effect January 1, 2017

Winnipeg, MB - The public is advised that new Transit and Handi-Transit fares take effect on January 1, 2017. Transit fares are increased annually based on inflation rates to fund operations. Inflationary Transit fare increases are implemented under the authority delegated through the Fees and Charges By-Law.

Full and Handi-Transit cash fares will be $2.70. Reduced and Senior cash fares will be $2.20. New rates for tickets and passes will also be in effect January 1, 2017.

City of Winnipeg Winter Leisure Guide now available

Winnipeg, MB - The Winter 2017 Leisure Guide is now available at all civic indoor pools, libraries and leisure centres, and will be available this Saturday at a number of retail locations. Winnipeg Free Press subscribers will receive a copy in today’s edition of the paper.

The Leisure Guide can also be viewed online by visiting Winnipeg.ca.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service reminds residents of the dangers of carbon monoxide

Winnipeg, MB- With temperatures dropping, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is reminding citizens to be aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide. If you suspect carbon monoxide in your home, exit immediately and call 911.

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, tasteless gas that is a by-product of the combustion process. Dangerous accumulations of carbon monoxide can result from a faulty appliance, clogged chimney, inadequate venting or a buildup of engine exhaust.
