Bulletin #1: City of Winnipeg weather related service updates

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is recommending that all citizens and motorists stay home today and limit travel to essential trips only. Residential streets have significant accumulations of snow and clearing operations are currently focused on the regional and collector/bus route roadways to ensure essential services are available.

Due to winter weather conditions, some City of Winnipeg departments are experiencing service delays and interruptions.

Snow Clearing Update

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg is recommending that all citizens and motorists stay home today and limit travel to essential trips only. Residential streets have significant accumulations of snow and clearing operations are currently focused on the regional and collector/bus route roadways to ensure essential services are available.

City crews are continuing a truck plow operation on P1 regional streets and P2 collector/bus routes. A grader plow operation will commence at 7:00 p.m., tonight on the P1 and P2 networks.

Winter park amenities include: skating ponds, neighbourhood pleasure rinks, toboggan slides, hills and cross country ski trails.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service reminds citizens that permits required for fireworks displays

Winnipeg, MB - The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) would like to remind citizens who may be planning to include fireworks displays as part of their New Year’s Eve celebrations that such displays require a permit in the City of Winnipeg.

Permits are free and may be obtained online at Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service - Fireworks Permit Application or at the Fire Prevention Office located at 185 King Street.

City ready for forecasted snowfall

Winnipeg, MB - The City is monitoring the weather system that is forecast for the weekend and is ready to deal with any snow we may receive. Any required sanding, salting and plowing efforts will initially focus on main routes, bus routes and collector streets.

Motorists are urged to drive to road conditions and to use extreme caution when driving near any snow clearing equipment or sanding trucks.

City awards renovation grants to six community centres

Winnipeg, MB - Mayor Brian Bowman announced today that six City-owned community centres will receive funding for renovations.

The Community Centre Renovation Grant (CCRG) Program approved six applications from the Fall 2016 intake period for a combined total of $255,627.45 in grant funding. Since the program’s inception, the City has invested $4,391,190 into 111 different community centre applications for renovations across the city.

Recycle your Christmas tree

Winnipeg, MB - Recycle your real Christmas tree for free by taking it to one of the Let’s Chip In depots, open December 27, 2016 to January 20, 2017. Residents are reminded that trees placed at the curb next to recycling or garbage carts will not be collected.

All plastic tree bags, tinsel, lights, decorations and tree stands must be removed before leaving a tree at a depot.

Rapid Transit Continues Moving Forward

Winnipeg, MB - Expansion of the City’s rapid transit network continued today with the naming of MMM Group Limited as the preferred bidder to undertake a functional study to examine possible routes for a rapid transit corridor connecting east Winnipeg with the downtown.

Following a Request For Proposal (RFP) process which concluded in August 2016, MMM Group Limited was selected as the preferred bidder by achieving the highest score for its combined technical and financial submission for the project.

Holiday season operating hours for City of Winnipeg facilities and services

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg would like to wish you and your family all the best this holiday season.

All civic offices are closed at 12 noon on Friday, December 23, and closed all day on Monday, December 26, and Tuesday, December 27, 2016.

Civic offices will also be closed on Monday, January 2, 2017.
