Winnipeg Transit to observe moment of silence in honour of Irvine Fraser

Winnipeg, MB. - Winnipeg Transit will be observing a moment of silence at 1p.m. on Tuesday, February 21 in honour of their colleague, operator Irvine (Jubal) Fraser.

Transit operators will be pulling over and stopping their buses at safe locations to recognize one minute of silence.

Also in honour of Jubal Fraser, the route/destination signs on the front of buses will scroll the message “Rest In Peace 521” in addition to the usual route information all day on February 21. ‘521’ represents Jubal’s operator badge number.

Railway crossing closure on Elmhurst Road between Wilkes Avenue and Ridgewood Avenue

Winnipeg, MB - Elmhurst Road between Wilkes Avenue and Ridgewood Avenue will be completely closed to northbound and southbound traffic at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 18, 2017 for a CN railway crossing repair. Elmhurst Road will reopen at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 19, 2017.

Motorists are advised to allow for additional travel time and to use alternate routes in this area to reach their destinations.

Mayor Bowman Introduces Motion Calling For Public Inquiry

Winnipeg, MB - a motion calling upon the Province of Manitoba to commit to a formal commission of inquiry was introduced today at Executive Policy Committee by Mayor Brian Bowman.

The motion calls on the province to commit to conducting a commission of inquiry under The Manitoba Evidence Act to consider any and all matters for the purposes of reviewing all mechanisms regulating conflict of interest and disclosure as it relates to City of Winnipeg elected members of Council and its senior public service members.

Council Selection Panel Recommends First Integrity Commissioner for the City of Winnipeg

Winnipeg, MB - A three member selection panel of Council is recommending that Ms. Sherri Walsh be appointed as the first Integrity Commissioner for the City of Winnipeg.

“On behalf of the selection panel, I am pleased to recommend Ms. Walsh as the City of Winnipeg’s first Integrity Commissioner,” said Councillor Mike Pagtakhan who chaired the selection panel. ”The appointment of an Integrity Commissioner is long overdue and it’s great to be moving forward with a recommendation for Executive Policy Committee and ultimately Council’s consideration.”

City releases Financial Update to December 31, 2016

Winnipeg, MB - The City of Winnipeg's Financial Status Update Report to December 31, 2016, will be presented at the meeting of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance on February 13, 2017. The Report cites a deficit of $5.1 million for the 2016 fiscal year (ending December 31, 2016). Under The City of Winnipeg Charter, the City of Winnipeg is legally required to balance its budget and is not permitted to run a deficit, therefore deficit elimination measures have been taken.
