Louise Bridge to be completely closed for maintenance on Sunday, August 20

Winnipeg, MB – Northbound and southbound directions of the Louise Bridge from Nairn Avenue to Sutherland Avenue, will be completely closed to traffic from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. this Sunday, August 20. The bridge closure is for general bridge maintenance including concrete deck and expansion joint repairs.

Pedestrian access will be maintained.

Access to the Buchanan Marine Boat Launch will also be maintained.

Motorists should use alternate routes such as the Provencher Bridge or Disraeli Bridges while maintenance work is underway.

City of Winnipeg Fall Leisure Guide now available

Winnipeg, MB – The Fall 2017 Leisure Guide is now available at all civic indoor pools, libraries and leisure centres, and will be available Saturday at a number of retail locations. Winnipeg Free Press subscribers will receive a copy in today’s edition of the paper.

Activity registration will have staggered start dates as follows:

Statement from Mayor Brian Bowman on Acts of Anti-Semitism in Winnipeg

Winnipeg, MB – Mayor Bowman issued the following statement today regarding the anti-Semitic graffiti discovered in Winnipeg:

“Winnipeg is a city that takes pride in its rich diversity. That is why it is especially disturbing to learn of the recently discovered anti-Semitic graffiti in our community.

These intolerant acts of hate are reprehensible and offensive to our community and will not deter our ongoing efforts towards strengthening inclusiveness in our city.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services hosts Equity and Diversity Camp to encourage newcomer youth to consider a career in firefighting, paramedicine and emergency telecommunications

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) training academy welcomed ten newcomer youth this week as part of their Equity and Diversity Camp. The week-long camp is designed to provide newcomer youth with exposure to a variety of scenarios that firefighters, paramedics, and WFPS 911 communication operators encounter on a daily basis. Youth also participate in career training workshops such as interview preparation.

Hassle-free parking, without the fee

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Parking Authority (WPA) has removed the service charge to use PayByPhone at the City of Winnipeg’s on-street locations and surface parking lots. This exciting initiative gives motorists free access to use the world’s leading parking app. The strategic move by the WPA will reduce the City’s reliance on costly parking infrastructure, such as meters, while encouraging service adoption - a model that has seen success across other major metropolitan hubs like Vancouver, Seattle and San Francisco.

Arlington Bridge to be temporarily closed

Winnipeg, MB – The Arlington Bridge will be temporarily closed from Logan Avenue to Dufferin Avenue, starting at 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 12 until Friday, August 18 at 6 p.m. to facilitate structural steel and sidewalk repairs.

Pedestrian access will be permitted on the west sidewalk while this work is underway.

Motorists should use alternate routes such as the McPhillips Street Underpass or Slaw Rebchuck Bridge.

Smith Street closed for Winnipeg BBQ and Blues Festival

Winnipeg, MB – Smith Street from Ellice Avenue to Notre Dame Avenue will be temporarily closed from 5:30 p.m. on Friday, August 11 until 10 a.m. on Sunday, August 13 for the Winnipeg BBQ and Blues Festival.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes during this time.

City serves up recreation opportunities with resurfaced tennis courts

Winnipeg, MB - At an event this morning, Councillor Brian Mayes officially opened two newly-reconstructed tennis courts and kicked off a free beginner tennis clinic with one of Manitoba’s top tennis players, Kevin Kylar.

“The revamped tennis courts offer another way to get active at City parks for free,” said Brian Mayes, City Councillor for St. Vital. “Whether you’ve been playing tennis for years or are trying it out for the first time, these brand new courts are the perfect way to enjoy the sport.”

Community celebrates grand opening of Apee Panchhi Park

Winnipeg, MB - At an event this morning, representatives from all levels of government joined the community to celebrate the grand opening of Apee Panchhi Park and honoured the park’s namesake, Mr. Apee Panchhi.

"Mr. Apee Panchhi is an example of the Canadian Dream,” said Russ Wyatt, City Councillor for Transcona. “He came with very little to Canada and turned adversity into opportunity, and by doing so, has made our community and Winnipeg better for it."

Winnipeg, MB - York Avenue between Edmonton Street and Carlton Street will be temporarily closed to traffic this Thursday, August 3 from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. for a film production.

Motorists should allow additional time to get to their destinations, and use alternate routes.
