Residents advised to take measures to protect internal plumbing from freezing

Winnipeg, MB - With the recent colder temperatures, the City is recommending that property owners weatherproof their basements or crawlspaces to prevent their internal plumbing from freezing.

Internal plumbing that isn’t protected can freeze every winter. Every year, 311 receives a number of reports from properties with no water due to frozen internal plumbing. So far this winter, there have been 115 reports of no water due to frozen internal plumbing.

Reminder – Let’s Chip In depots now open

Winnipeg, MB – Residents are reminded that they can recycle their real Christmas trees for free by taking them to a Let's Chip In Depot, open until January 31, 2018. Trees placed at the curb next to recycling or garbage carts will not be collected.

All plastic tree bags, tinsel, lights, decorations and tree stands must be removed before leaving a tree at a depot.

Residents are welcome to help themselves to free wood chips, which will be available at all depots in early January (while quantities last). Please remember to bring your own container.

Parking Authority to review practices, enforcement, and communications related to complimentary downtown parking

Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Parking Authority (WPA) will review its practices, enforcement operations, and communications related to two-hour complimentary downtown on-street parking on Saturdays to ensure greater clarity going forward.

Until such time, the WPA will not be issuing tickets within the first two hours for downtown on-street parking between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays, excluding the Hospital Zones, in the immediate future. The WPA will either cancel or refund those tickets issued between December 2, 2017 and December 23, 2017.

New St. Vital Park treetop lookout and toboggan slides offer winter recreational fun for Winnipeggers

Winnipeg, MB – The exciting new treetop lookout and toboggan slides located at St. Vital Park are now officially open. The new structure features a fully accessible ramp leading to a pair of slides, and a viewing deck situated on top of a warming shelter with panoramic views of the park.

“The Province of Manitoba is pleased to partner with the City of Winnipeg to make family friendly and accessible community recreation spaces like this a reality,” said Minister Squires. “These partnerships are important to the growth and quality of life in our communities.”

Take a Free Ride on Winnipeg Transit this New Year’s Eve

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg and Manitoba Public Insurance are helping ensure everyone gets home safely this New Year’s Eve by riding Winnipeg Transit for free.

“The Free Ride program provides a free and responsible way for Winnipeggers get home after ringing in the New Year,” said Councillor Jenny Gerbasi, Deputy Mayor and City Councillor for Fort Rouge - East Fort Garry. “Thank you to Manitoba Public Insurance and Winnipeg Transit for helping keep our roads safe and enabling residents to make the right choice to not drink and drive.”

Southbound Arlington Bridge to be temporarily closed

Winnipeg, MB – The southbound direction of travel on the Arlington Bridge from Dufferin Avenue to Logan Avenue will be temporarily closed this Wednesday, December 20 starting at 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. to facilitate street lighting repairs.

Motorists should use alternate routes such as the McPhillips Street Underpass or Slaw Rebchuck Bridge.
