Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Helmsdale Avenue and Ashburn Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 8:27 p.m. on Sunday, April 5, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a report of fire in a two-and-a-half storey house under renovations in the 100 block of Helmsdale Avenue. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered heavy smoke coming from an exterior wall. In order to extinguish the fire, crews gained access from the interior of the home and from the gable end of the house.

All occupants self-evacuated from the home prior to the arrival of crews. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to house fire on King Edward Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 2:36 p.m. on Sunday, April 5, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a report of fire in a single family home in the 400 block of King Edward Street. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke in the house and launched an offensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 2:54 p.m.

All occupants self-evacuated from the home, prompted by a working smoke alarm. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to hotel fire on Wellington Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 3:19 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to an automatic fire alarm at a hotel in the 1800 block of Wellington Avenue. While responding, further 911 reports were received indicating fire in one of the suites. A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and WFPS crew members on the scene, due to the potential for a high number of occupants in the building.

Winnipeg declares state of local emergency

Winnipeg, MB – Today, Council voted unanimously to declare a state of local emergency for Winnipeg in response to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. Along with its existing powers, the City of Winnipeg will be able to use the authority under the state of local emergency to acquire additional resources to deal with the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic as required.

Council Approves Unprecedented Relief Plan on Property and Business Taxpayers to Ease Financial Burden of Covid-19 on Property and Business Taxpayers

Winnipeg, MB – At a Special Meeting of Council today, efforts to ease the financial burden of COVID-19 on Winnipeg homeowners and businesses were approved by Council.

On March 20, Mayor Brian Bowman and Councillor Scott Gillingham introduced an amending motion to the 2020-2023 Multi-Year Balanced Budgets for Council’s consideration to look at ways the City could provide financial relief for property and business taxpayers. City Council voted 11-3 in favour of the Budgets which gave the public service the authority to develop the plan.

City of Winnipeg: Flood Bulletin #1

Winnipeg, MB – In its 2020 March Flood Outlook released yesterday, the Province of Manitoba advised that there is a risk of moderate flooding on the Red River. Predicted water levels at the James Avenue gauge at peak is between 5.8 metres (19.0 ft) and 6.25 metres (20.5 ft) depending on weather conditions.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Manitoba Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 8:52 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey, multi-family home in the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered heavy smoke coming from the building. Crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 9:34 a.m.

All occupants either self-evacuated from the building before crews arrived, or evacuated with assistance from WFPS crews. No injuries were reported.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Anderson Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 11:04 p.m. on Monday, March 30, 2020, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a vacant house the 400 block of Anderson Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. Crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 11:43 p.m.

Crews conducted a search of the building and no occupants were located. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available at this time.
