Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is celebrating the important work of our Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) 911 call takers and dispatchers during National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, April 11-17, 2021. National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is an opportunity to recognize all emergency telecommunications personnel for their frontline service to our community. Throughout the pandemic, they’ve adapted to enhanced safety and dispatch protocols while continuing to keep both citizens and first responders safe.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to significant grass fire in Charleswood

Winnipeg, MB – At 4:59 p.m. on April 11, 2021, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of a fire in the 1500 block of Charleswood Road. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered a fire in a grassy area, extending to a nearby treed area.

Using specialized wildland-urban interface equipment, including the WFPS Bison, crews were able to attack the fire while protecting nearby structures and homes. Crews had the fire under control at 6:16 p.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Ellice Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 6:32 a.m. on April 11, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a single-storey retail building in the 700 block of Ellice Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. An offensive attack was initially launched but due to deteriorating conditions, crews transitioned to an exterior, defensive attack. The fire was declared under control at 11:06 a.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Aikins Street

Winnipeg, MB – At 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2021, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey home in the 300 block of Aikins Street.

When crews arrived on scene, they encountered smoke coming from the home. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 5:14 p.m.

Buses equipped with new securements for wheelchairs, scooters to roll out starting April 8

Operators on designated buses are trained and ready to assist passengers

Winnipeg, MB – The first of Winnipeg Transit’s newest buses will begin operating this week with new securement systems for mobility devices such as wheelchairs and scooters.

Two new securement systems will be available on the 32 buses Winnipeg Transit purchased for 2021 as part of its regular Bus Replacement Program -- the Quantum and the Q-Pod.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Alfred Avenue

Winnipeg, MB – At 8:02 a.m. on April 7, 2021, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, one-and-a-half storey house in the 400 block of Alfred Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene they encountered smoke coming from the structure. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 8:16 a.m.

Crews completed a search of the house and no occupants were found. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimates are currently available.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to significant grass fire in Charleswood

Winnipeg, MB – At 2:21 p.m. on April 5, 2021, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) crews responded to reports of a fire in the grassy and forested area behind Charleswood Road. Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered a grass and brush fire, extending several hundred metres.

Using specialized wildland-urban interface equipment, including the WFPS Bisons, crews were able to attack the fire, while protecting nearby structures and homes. Crews had the fire under control at 3:38 p.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Dufferin Avenue and Manila Road

Winnipeg, MB – Last evening, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two fires.

Dufferin Avenue Fire

At 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 4, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in multi-family residence in the 700 block of Dufferin Avenue.

When crews arrived on scene they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. Crews launched an offensive attack, declaring the fire under control at 8:23 p.m.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fires on Maryland Street and Pembina Highway

Winnipeg, MB – Last evening, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two apartment building fires.

Maryland Street Fire

At 8:12 p.m. on Friday, April 2, 2021, the WFPS responded to a fire alarm in a three-storey apartment building in the 500 block of Maryland Street.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke in the building. An offensive fire attack was launched and the fire was quickly declared under control, containing it to the suite where it originated.
