The Winnipeg Blue Bombers know a thing or two about allowing no sacks on the field. Now they’re teaming up with us to get the word out about the importance of removing them from your pets.

Blue Bombers all-stars Brady Oliveira, Stanley Bryant, and Pat Neufeld are appearing in a series of new ads — alongside Animal Services alumni dogs JB, Kukuk, and Max — designed to punt misconceptions about spaying and neutering.

“We wanted to have some fun, while drawing attention to all of the benefits of spaying or neutering your pets,” said Jennifer Harrower, Acting General Manager of the Animal Services Agency.

“These are all tough players who know there’s no shame for you or your pet in having them spayed or neutered,” said Harrower. “Your pet’s personality will remain the same, and you’ll be helping them lead longer, happier lives. You’ll also get a discount on your dog or cat’s licence.”

Spaying or neutering your pet reduces the risk of certain cancers, and can also help with your pet’s aggression or urge to roam.

It also helps your community by controlling pet populations. Overcrowding at Winnipeg shelters has been an ongoing issue since the pandemic, with the Animal Services Agency often holding twice the number of dogs it has capacity for.

Spaying or neutering can be performed at various clinics and animal hospitals in Winnipeg. Cost assistance for residents living on low income is available through the City-supported SNAP program at the Winnipeg Humane Society.
