Winnipeg, MB – The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service’s (WFPS) new temporary modular station in Waverley West is commissioned as of Saturday, January 11, 2025.
“This modular fire-paramedic station is an innovative solution that ensures we can deliver services to this rapidly-growing neighborhood faster while we work on building a permanent station,” said Mayor Scott Gillingham. “Our preliminary 2025 budget reflects our strong commitment to public safety by investing in staff, equipment, and facilities like this to meet the demands of our growing city.”
A fire engine and four-person fire/rescue crew, and an ambulance and two-person paramedic crew have been operating out of the station located at 130 Eaglewood Dr. since December, but now the station is officially commissioned.
“As a former firefighter, I understand firsthand how critical emergency services are for Manitoba families,” said David Pankratz, MLA for Waverley. “Alongside the 40 new firefighters funded by the Province, this fire-paramedic station will provide essential support to the many families who call south Winnipeg home.”
This new station will reduce emergency response times in Waverley West until the permanent station is complete. This station is one outcome of WFPS’ 2020 Strategic Direction, a plan to meet Winnipeg’s current and future fire and paramedic service needs.
“Residents of Waverley West are thrilled to be welcoming the WFPS crew to their new home in the heart of our rapidly growing community,” said Janice Lukes, Councillor for Waverley West.
Since the building is made of modular parts, it was assembled over the course of a few months this fall. Additional time was required for site preparation, utilities connection, and to complete the purchase of the modular building.
“I am proud to officially declare this building open today,” said Christian Schmidt, Fire and Paramedic Chief, WFPS. “As call volumes continue to increase in this area, I am pleased that crews are responding from within Waverley West, and building a modular station ensured this happened as quickly as possible.”
The temporary station is made of modular parts that can be disassembled and reassembled in another location when it is no longer required in Waverley West.
The total cost for this project was $6.8 million and included the cost of the building, site preparation, and assembly.
