City of Winnipeg continues to expand online options for permit customers

Winnipeg, MB – Today, the City of Winnipeg launched more new features to Permits Online to make the permitting process easier and more convenient for our customers.

In this second phase of planned improvements to Permits Online, homeowners can now apply for  plumbing and electrical permits if the homeowner lives in a single detached dwelling that is their primary residence and does the work themselves (some restrictions apply for electrical permits). As well, both homeowners and contractors can now apply for permits to develop a basement.

These enhancements build on Permits Online upgrades launched April 15, 2024, which included homeowners and contractors being able to apply for most residential building permits online, as well as being able to save and return to partially completed permit applications within a 30-day period. Together, both phases of improvements now allow all residential building and trade permits to be applied for online.

“We are continually working to improve the permit process and I am pleased to see more options now available for our customers,” said Sherri Rollins, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development. “There will be more enhancements coming later this year.”

“These enhancements continue to improve our customers’ ability to apply for certain permits online,” said Hazel Borys, Director of the Planning, Property & Development Department. “This is the second in a series of improvements designed to enhance our customer service and ultimately to help modernize our Permits Online platform.”

Using Permits Online, customers can view the status of permits and applications, and make payments. As well, licensed contractors can renew licences online.

Expanding Permits Online is part of an ongoing process to improve our digital service delivery, and support building and development in Winnipeg.
