Winnipeg, MB – At 7:02 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of fire in a hotel in the 700 block of Main Street.
When crews arrived, the building’s sprinkler system was activated and had already knocked down most of the flames. Crews finished putting out the fire, and it was declared under control at 7:27 p.m.
Occupants of the building were able to self-evacuate before WFPS crews arrived. One person was assessed by paramedics and transported to hospital in unstable condition.
Most of the damage was contained to the suite where the fire started. No damage estimates are available at this time. The fire remains under investigation.
At 11:57 p.m., WFPS crews responded to reports of fire in a commercial building in the 1200 block of Main Street.
When crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. It was not safe for crews to enter the building, so they launched a defensive attack and fought the fire from outside. The fire was brought under control at 1:30 a.m.
Occupants of the building self-evacuated before crews arrived. The building sustained water, smoke, and fire damage. No damage estimates are available at this time.
Residents are asked to exercise caution in the area, as water used to fight the fire has frozen and created slippery conditions.
City of Winnipeg crews will be monitoring conditions and applying sand and de-icing agents to roadways and sidewalks as required to improve traction.
The fire remains under investigation.
