Winnipeg, MB – At 3:53 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2024, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey multi-family residence in the 100 block of Hallet Street.
When crews arrived to the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. Crews initially tried to fight the fire from inside the house, but due to the heavy fire conditions they were forced to exit. They transitioned to a defensive fire attack from outside using an aerial ladder to apply water to the fire. Crews remain on scene at this time working to fully extinguish the fire.
At this time, no injuries have been reported. The City’s Emergency Social Services Team has been deployed to help displaced residents find temporary accommodations.
The residence has sustained significant smoke, fire, and water damage. Damage estimates are not available.
The fire is under investigation.
Update on Main Street fire
WFPS crews worked throughout the night to extinguish the fire in the 500 block of Main Street. The fire was declared under control at 3:39 a.m. Some crews remain on scene putting out hot spots.
No injuries were reported. The building sustained significant damage and is considered a complete loss. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
Northbound Main Street has re-opened. Southbound Main Street between Alexander Avenue and Logan Avenue will remain closed until crews depart the scene.
Once the road re-opens, residents are asked to exercise caution in the area, as water used to fight the fire has frozen and created slippery conditions. City of Winnipeg crews will be monitoring conditions and applying sand and de-icing agents to roadways and sidewalks as required to improve traction.
The fire remains under investigation.
