Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is now accepting applications for the Compost Support Program.
“Reducing the amount of food waste entering our landfill can lead to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, which is why composting is so important,” said Brian Mayes, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Water, Waste and Environment. “The Compost Support Program will help provide greater access to food waste collection services and composting for Winnipeggers who may not have access or the financial means to do so. I want to personally thank former Councillor Kevin Klein, now the provincial Minister of Environment and Climate, for his support of this program when he was on Council.”
As part of the program, organizations that collect and transport food waste to a licensed compost facility are eligible to apply for support payments up to a maximum of $65,000 in cash and in-kind advertising credits.
The successful applicants must use the funding to help provide greater access to food waste collection programs in Winnipeg. Some ways to do this include:
- Providing a subsidy for low-income residents who wish to participate in compost collection but are financially unable to
- Assisting in developing new programs for residents whose dwellings do not currently qualify for compost programs (e.g. multi-family)
- Implementing other measures to offset costs of their program for the benefit of Winnipeg residents
Applications for support payments are being accepted until April 17, 2023.
