Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg has installed and activated traffic signals at the north intersection of McPhillips Street and Templeton Avenue to improve traffic flow and increase safety for all road users.

“These new traffic signals will provide an immediate improvement to pedestrian safety at the intersection, and when the curb ramps are installed in 2023, improved accessibility as well,” said Councillor Janice Lukes, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Public Works. “The signals will also provide a protected left turn phase for northbound traffic on McPhillips turning left onto Templeton, making that turning movement much easier and safer.”

“The new traffic signals are good news for Old Kildonan, and will make it safer for everyone to navigate through this busy intersection. I’m especially pleased that safety will be enhanced for pedestrians wishing to cross McPhillips Street, which has a high volume of traffic flow,” said Councillor Devi Sharma, Old Kildonan ward. “Traffic will flow more smoothly now that the signals have been activated and will reduce traffic congestion experienced by many in the area.”

Traffic analysis undertaken by the City identified traffic signals should be installed at the intersection to replace the existing stop signs to better accommodate the large number of people walking, cycling, and driving through the intersection.

Additional traffic safety features, such as adjustments to the north median, audible pedestrian signals, and curb ramps with yellow detectable warning tiles will be completed in the new year. The overall cost for the project at completion is estimated at approximately $250,000-$300,000 with split funding from development and the Traffic Engineering Improvement Program.
