Nomination Period for Mayor, Councillor, and School Trustee candidates starts today

Winnipeg, MB – The Senior Election Official for the City of Winnipeg will be accepting nomination papers for the offices of Mayor, Councillor, and School Trustee, beginning today, Wednesday, September 14, 2022, and ending at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20, 2022.

The City Clerk’s Department, located on the main floor of the Susan A. Thompson Building, 510 Main St., will be open every day during the above noted period from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

All candidates must submit their nomination papers in-person with the Senior Election Official and are encouraged to make an appointment in advance. Candidates must also provide valid identification showing proof of name and current address to be nominated.

Nomination papers must be filed by the candidate in-person on the prescribed form, and have the required number of valid signatures, as follows:

  • Mayoralty candidates must have a minimum of 250 signatures from voters whose names appear on the voters list
  • Councillor candidates must have a minimum of 25 signatures from voters whose names appear on the voters list for the council ward in which they are seeking election
  • School Trustee candidates must have a minimum of 25 signatures from voters whose names appear on the voters list for the school division ward in which they are seeking election

The deadline to file is 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 20, 2022.

Candidates may withdraw their nomination, in writing, until 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 21, 2022.

Order of names on the ballot

At 6 p.m. on September 21, a random draw to determine the order of the candidates' names on the ballot will take place in the Susan A. Thompson Building.

The 2022 City of Winnipeg Municipal and School Boards Election is scheduled for Wednesday, October 26, 2022. Eligible voters will have the opportunity to cast a ballot for Mayor, Councillor, and School Trustees.
