Public invited to provide feedback on draft Urban Forest Strategy designed to help Winnipeg “grow into the future”

Winnipeg, MB – The City of Winnipeg is inviting residents to learn about and provide feedback on the draft Winnipeg Urban Forest Strategy – a long-term planning document that will guide the long-range protection, preservation, and management of the city’s tree canopy.

Development of the strategy is crucial and timely as the urban forest faces increasingly significant loss due to insects and disease as well as mounting pressure from climate change and urban development. Now is the time for all of Winnipeg to play a part in defining plans to protect our trees and ensure our urban forest can grow into the future.

The draft strategy was developed based on both national best practices in urban canopy management and the unique needs of Winnipeg’s urban forest, as well as the passionate insights Winnipeggers provided in 2020 when Phase 1 of public engagement asked what they value when it comes to our collective urban forest.

Feedback collected through Phase 2 will help finalize the draft Winnipeg Urban Forest Strategy and help prioritize actions to protect, grow, and enhance the urban forest.

Winnipeggers can share their thoughts by taking an online survey (open today through June 22, 2022) and/or by attending one of two online open houses.
