Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Main Street

Released: May 22, 2022 at 1:22 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 9:41 a.m. on May 22, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to reports of a fire in a hotel in the 700 block of Main Street. Due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with a large, occupied structure, extra crews were dispatched.

Upon arrival on scene, crews encountered smoke coming from the structure. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 9:56 a.m. The building’s sprinkler system had activated, helping to keep the fire from spreading. Crews ensured all hotspots were extinguished.

Some occupants self-evacuated from the building and some were assisted by WFPS crews. No injuries were reported. Winnipeg Transit deployed a bus to the scene to provide temporary shelter.

The City’s Emergency Social Services was engaged to assist 15 individuals in finding temporary accommodations. Crews located and brought two cats to safety. The City’s Animal Services Agency attended to assist with the animals.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The suite where the fire originated sustained fire, smoke, and water damage, while several additional suites sustained water and smoke damage. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
