Winnipeg, MB – At 5:17 a.m. on Thursday, May 19, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building in the 300 block of River Avenue.
When crews arrived on-scene, they found a light haze of smoke coming from a portion of the structure. They launched offensive attack, addressing the fire in a single suite and checking for extensions throughout the building. The fire was declared under control before 6:52 a.m. A fire watch was established to monitor conditions periodically and prevent rekindling.
Occupants either self-evacuated the building prior to crew arrival, or were assisted by crews in evacuating the building if needed. No injuries were reported.
Crews located and temporarily removed one lizard from a suite.
Most occupants were allowed back into their suites once crews ventilated the building. Others were able to find alternate accommodations.
Fire damage was contained to the suite of origin, though the building suffered smoke damage throughout. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
