Two-year pilot aims to decrease wait times for customers, while incentivizing drivers and owners to increase number of vehicles available

Winnipeg, MB – Today the City of Winnipeg launched Winnipeg WAV (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle), an on-demand, accessible vehicle for hire booking service that’s the first of its kind in the city.

The two-year Winnipeg WAV pilot provides users a centralized service for booking their trip, with accessible vehicles from multiple taxi and personal transportation provider companies available in one convenient location. Users can set their pickup and drop-off locations, and Winnipeg WAV will automatically select the nearest available vehicle to ensure the fastest service.

“Long wait times for wheelchair accessible vehicles for hire have created a barrier for Winnipeggers who rely on this important service,” said Matt Allard, Chairperson of the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works. “Through the Winnipeg WAV pilot, our objective is to reduce wait times, while encouraging dispatchers to increase the accessible operating capacity.”

Accessible vehicle drivers can earn up to $2,250/year in financial incentives for participating in the pilot, while owners can earn up to $2,500/year. Amounts are determined based on customer service metrics, including trips provided through Winnipeg WAV, driver rating, trip acceptance ratings, and inspections passed. Drivers who own their vehicles are eligible for both incentives.

The pilot is funded entirely through the City’s vehicle for hire accessibility surcharge, at a budget of $1.8 million. Following the pilot, the Public Service will bring recommendations to Council regarding the program’s future.

Winnipeg WAV is available to download on the Apple App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Users can also access the service by visiting winnipeg.ca/wav or by calling 204-986-4WAV (204-986-4928).
