Winnipeg, MB – At 8:34 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to reports of a fire in a one-and-a-half-storey, multi-family house in the 500 block of Alfred Avenue.
When crews arrived on-scene, they encountered smoke and flames coming from the building. They launched an offensive attack, knocking down the flames to a portion of the building. Due to deteriorating conditions and safety concerns relating to fire extension to the roof and walls, crews were forced to exit the house and fight the fire defensively. When conditions improved, crews re-entered the building to complete extinguishment of the fire. They declared the fire under control at 10:52 p.m.
Five occupants self-evacuated prior to crew arrival. Crews conducted a primary and secondary search but no additional occupants were located. There are no injuries reported at this time.
The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services was called to support three residents in finding temporary accommodations.
Pedestrians and motorists are advised to use caution as the area around the scene is ice-covered and slippery. The City will be monitoring conditions and applying sand and de-icing agents to roadways and sidewalks as required to improve traction.
The house suffered major structural damage. No damage estimates are available at this time. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
