Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Assiniboine Avenue

Released: February 6, 2022 at 4:56 p.m.

Winnipeg, MB – At 1:55 p.m. on Sunday, February 6, 2022, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to an automatic alarm at a high-rise apartment building in the 300 block of Assiniboine Avenue. A second alarm was called, increasing the number of apparatus and crew members on-scene due to the potential for high life hazards when dealing with a high-rise structure.

Crews encountered smoke coming from a suite on the third floor and launched an offensive attack. The fire was declared fire under control at 2:28 p.m.

Some occupants self-evacuated prior to crew arrival. Crews assisted others in safely evacuating the building. The remaining residents sheltered-in place if crews determined it was safe for them to do so.

One person was assessed on-scene by paramedics but did not require transport to hospital. One firefighter sustained an injury at the scene but did not require transport. No other injuries were reported.

A Winnipeg Transit bus was redeployed to the area to provide temporary shelter to evacuated residents. Most have returned to their suites. Occupants from two suites will be accommodated in other suites in the building.

The suite of origin suffered smoke, fire, and water damage. One neighbouring suite also suffered smoke and water damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No damage estimates are available.
